Colour Correction Specialist in Salford & Manchester
Colour correction specialists in Salford, Manchester
Hair gone orange after bleach? Box dye that won't budge? Patchy colour from another salon? At Avesta Hair, colour correction is one of our specialisms, not a service we squeeze in.
Our colour correction specialists in Salford have spent years mastering the science behind difficult hair colour. We'll be honest about what's possible, and we'll keep your hair healthy along the way.
Anita's story: why colour correction became a specialism
"Clients kept coming to me after a colour correction somewhere else. It had gone orange, or their hair had started breaking."
Over the years, I kept seeing the same pattern. Clients were scared to come in and scared to tell the hairdresser what they'd done. So they kept colouring at home, because salons felt expensive or the process was never explained.
Others had paid for colour elsewhere and been let down. Nobody had talked it through properly. They walked in expecting the picture on their phone, but nobody told them the truth: your hair decides how far it can go. I wanted to be the person who explains that honestly, and then actually fixes it.
That led me deep into the science of colour, especially dark hair. It took me years to perfect colour correction, and just as long to learn how to explain it clearly to clients. Nearly 30 years into my career, it's still some of the most rewarding work I do.
What counts as a colour correction?
Colour correction isn't one service. It can be a small fix or a full transformation:
- Root glow or banding: blending roots that have turned too warm or bright
- Brassy or orange hair: neutralising unwanted warmth properly, not just masking it
- Box dye removal: safely lifting home colour, including black box dye
- Henna removal: working with henna, which behaves very differently to standard dye
- Dark to light: taking black or brown hair to blonde while protecting its condition
- Patchy or uneven colour: evening out colour from previous salon visits
Whatever the job, the goal is the same: the colour you want, with hair kept as healthy, soft and strong as we can.
Dark hair specialists: why dark hair turns orange
Hairdressers grade natural colour from level 1 (black) to level 10 (lightest blonde). Dark hair sits at levels 1 to 5, and it's where we specialise, including European, Afro-Caribbean, Asian and Middle Eastern hair.
We all see celebrities go from deep brunette to icy blonde overnight. In reality, dark hair is full of warm pigment. As it lightens, it passes through red, orange and yellow, and coarser dark hair often resists lifting.
This is where many colour jobs go wrong. Hair reaches orange and a toner is put on top to "cool it down". Without the right foundation underneath, toner can't neutralise that warmth. It darkens the hair or leaves it murky, and the orange comes back within weeks.
True colour correction on dark hair is a step-by-step process built on colour science, not a quick tone. If you simply want soft, lived-in lightness rather than a full change, our balayage specialists can do that for dark hair too.
Honest expectations: how long does colour correction take?
A standard colour appointment might take three or four hours. A colour correction can take anywhere from five to 12 hours, and sometimes the whole day.
That's because, until we start, nobody knows exactly what's underneath. Old colour, box dye and henna can all react in different ways. We can't know how far your hair will lift, or how much it can safely take, until we're working on it.
"The picture is the goal, but the hair dictates how far it's going to go. My job is to tell you that before you spend your money, not after."
So we never promise a picture on the first visit. Some transformations need several sessions to keep your hair in good condition. A salon that says "yes, no problem" to any photo, without explaining any of this, is setting you up for disappointment.
Colour correction is an investment. That's why we explain everything before you spend a penny.
Our colour correction process
You're not a hairdresser, and you shouldn't need to be. You can read plenty online or on social media, but colour correction takes years of study. Our job is to make it make sense.
- An in-depth consultation. We learn your hair history: box dye, henna, previous salon colour, everything.
- Clear explanations. We use simple, everyday comparisons so you understand what your hair can and can't do.
- Strand testing. We test how your hair lifts and holds colour before committing.
- An honest plan. We agree realistic goals, timings and cost, including whether it needs more than one visit.
- Protection throughout. The lighteners and colours we use contain bond-protecting technology, and it's included as standard. Many salons charge for a bond treatment as an optional extra, but we don't see healthy hair as an add-on. Our aim is for you to leave with shinier, better-conditioned hair.
- Aftercare that protects your colour. We can make bespoke colour masks to take home, so your tone lasts longer between visits.
It's all about communication. You leave understanding your hair, not just looking at it.
Coloured your own hair? You're welcome here
We know how it feels to walk into a salon after colouring your own hair. Many clients arrive already stressed, dreading the moment they have to admit it, half expecting to be told off. Social media doesn't help.
So let's say it clearly: it's okay. You're here now, and we can help.
Colouring your hair at home is a completely valid choice. Maybe salon visits didn't fit the budget. Maybe you didn't have the time, or you had little ones at home and just wanted to feel beautiful. Having your hair done professionally should be a choice, not a rule.
You'll never be judged or made to feel bad at Avesta Hair. Our job is to put you at ease, understand what's on your hair, and find the safest route to the colour you love. Box dye, home highlights, a colour that went wrong: we've seen it all, and we can change it.
Avesta is also a gender-neutral, LGBTQIA+ friendly salon, with a private space for guests observing hijab, so everyone can relax while we work.
A colour team educated beyond the average salon
Colour correction is some of the most difficult work in hairdressing, so our education goes far beyond standard training.
Anita is a qualified educator and a Keune educator, and she trains every member of the Avesta Hair team in colour theory and colour correction. Each stylist learns the science of lifting dark hair, neutralising warmth and protecting the hair's condition.
Whoever you see at our Salford salon, you're in the hands of a highly trained colour specialist.
If you have curly or textured hair, our curly hair specialists plan every correction around your curl pattern. And once your colour is right, our hair extensions specialists can add length or volume to match it.
Colour correction FAQs
- My hair went orange after bleaching. Can you fix it?
- Yes. Orange and brassy hair is one of our most common colour corrections. We fix the warmth at its source, rather than covering it with toner.
- Can you remove box dye?
- Yes, including black box dye. We assess your hair first and plan the gentlest way to lift it.
- Can you work with henna?
- Often, yes. Henna reacts differently to bleach, so a strand test is essential before we begin.
- Can I go from black or dark brown to blonde in one day?
- Sometimes, but not always. It depends on your hair's history and condition. We'll tell you honestly at your consultation.
- How much does colour correction cost?
- Every correction is different, so we give you a personal quote after your consultation, before any work begins.
- Will colour correction damage my hair?
- Our priority is your hair's health. We use bond protection, test as we go and stop when your hair has had enough.
- Is a bond treatment extra?
- No. Bond protection is built into the lighteners and colours we use, and it's included as standard.
- Do you need a consultation first?
- Yes. A consultation and strand test let us plan safely and give you an accurate time and price.
- Where are you based?
- Avesta Hair is at Unit 2, 112 Phoebe Street, Salford M5 3PH, a short trip from Manchester city centre, with parking nearby, and welcomes colour correction clients from across Greater Manchester and the North West.
